The Thimbles Summary
Thinking, Fast and Slow
The book in one sentence
Our minds run on two systems, a fast intuitive one and a slow deliberate one, and most of our predictable errors come from trusting the fast one when the slow one should be in charge.
Who it's for
Leaders, investors, analysts and anyone who makes decisions under uncertainty and wants to understand why smart people get things wrong.
The big idea
Kahneman, a psychologist who won the Nobel Prize in economics, summarises decades of research, much of it carried out with his late colleague Amos Tversky. He describes two modes of thought. System 1 is fast, automatic and effortless: it reads faces, finishes familiar phrases and jumps to conclusions. System 2 is slow, effortful and logical: it does long multiplication and checks arguments. System 2 likes to think it’s in charge, but it’s lazy and often simply endorses whatever System 1 suggests. The result is systematic bias, in experts as much as anyone.
