The Thimbles Summary
Dare to Lead
The book in one sentence
Courageous leadership is a set of skills anyone can learn, and they all start with being willing to face uncertainty, risk and emotional exposure.
Who it's for
Managers and leaders at any level who want braver conversations, more trust and less self-protective behaviour in their teams.
The big idea
Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, spent years studying courage, vulnerability and shame. For this book she and her team interviewed around 150 senior leaders around the world and asked how leadership would need to change for organisations to cope with constant, complicated change. Again and again, the answer came back to courage. In her view, leadership has nothing to do with job title: it belongs to anyone willing to notice what people and processes could become and to take the risk of growing them. She argues that courage can be taught, observed and measured, and that its foundation is vulnerability.
