The Thimbles Summary
Blue Ocean Strategy
The book in one sentence
Stop fighting rivals for a share of an existing market and create uncontested market space, by offering buyers a leap in value at a lower cost.
Who it's for
Strategists, founders and managers stuck in price wars, and anyone whose industry feels crowded, commoditised or stuck.
The big idea
Kim and Mauborgne, professors at INSEAD, divide markets into two kinds. Red oceans are existing industries with known boundaries, where companies fight over a fixed pool of demand and the water turns bloody. Blue oceans are markets that do not yet exist, where a company generates fresh demand and, for a while, has the water to itself. Their research covered around 150 strategic moves across more than 30 industries over roughly a hundred years.
